These Chinese masks are carved by hand from single pieces of wood and then hand-painted. Their origins date back centuries and are used by all people of the northern Chinese regions. The tradition of mask making brought together beliefs, myths and symbols from Shamanism, Buddhism and Hinduism and the resulting combination of ideas and iconography is richly reflected.
